There was nothing like being a final-checker and tucked up next to the tail of a Tomcat when it went into Zone 5 afterburner. Your entire body became a subwoofer. Cat stroke snatched it down the flight deck, and you’d turn and tuck, one leg out straight to keep from getting blown away.
Now Intruders… Those bastiges hurt. The noise was at a higher frequency. It made your fillings vibrate painfully.
But the nice thing about the Intruders was watching them go off the bow with a full load of 500lb HEIs. They can’t land with all those bombs still on the hard points under the wings, so you knew someone was about to find out.

Back during Viet Nam it was a Zuni rocket fire off and start the worst flight deck fire in Navy history. Forrestal. The berthing I actually slept in was the one that was taken out by 500 pounders cooking off.
