My dad is a Vietnam era Army vet. He was in Germany from 71 to 74. Hes got some insane stories. The problem is it ruined some holiday’s like Christmas for example because he spent 3 years up on a hill in the black forest with 3 nuclear missiles standing at t-minus 10 seconds. When he landed state side in New York he was spit on and called names even though he wasn’t in Vietnam ever.

My uncle was a helicopter pilot and spent time in Germany too. I’m trying to find the Stripes article for the time frame, but during one flight mission, he and his crew had a craving for McDonald’s milkshakes. So they landed outside McDonalds. They had NJPs, but only got charged the cost in fuel to deviate from the flight path.

Unfortunately I’m getting in trouble lately for “solving” problems that way. In particular, we’re moving office buildings and don’t want to take the library books with us.

“Where’d the books go?”
“I removed them so they’re not a problem anymore.” [into the dumpster]
“I was going to have someone come by to pick them up for the Academy…”

Kinda helps to inform the underlings what deals or arrangements you’re trying to make before they take action…

On FB I tagged the sergeants that went on to be EO’s. One reminded us of a sergeant major doing a barracks check and getting upset about a confederate flag on display…that belonged to the black guy from South Carolina.
