My DIY Display Case Journey

Wonderful display. I like how you organize your anime figures.

So I ran to go get my kids after work Wednesday and scheduled a pickup for a couple pre-cut acrylic sheets since the city their mom lives in doesn’t have a place that carries full sheets. They are thinner than the ones I already have so we will see how they hold up vs the thicker ones.

Anyways when I got home I made another attempt to cut the acrylic and finally managed to get a good one :joy:

Before I cut anymore I wanted to finish up one front panel so I can see how it works and if I’m going to need more supplies.

First was adding vinyl tape to border the sheet.

Next was adding weatherstripping foam around the border and laying the magnetic tape inside of that border. I had to use some double sided tape to mount shims that would be used to mount the magnetic tape and bring it flush with the weatherstripping.

Currently letting the tape and adhesives of all that jazz set before I test it on the rack!

Looks like bread sticks with cheese and marinara sauce, Pizza Hut perhaps? :pizza:

That’s thinking like a fat kid, I do it all the time.

And it sticks! Ended up with a small gap on one corner but only when I fit it to the left side rack. I think the frame is a bit twisted on that one but not a huge issue, it’s fixable lol!

Picked up a skill saw blade for plastics…. Should have just done that from the start and saved myself so much time and messed up sheets. Nicest edges I’ve had to deal with so far haha

Really going in on this huh

Yup, I like to keep myself busy with projects in my free time. Feels good learning new things and acquiring new skills. Plus I can’t find decent display cases that I like so dammit I’ll just make one.

Nothing wrong with picking up new skills

Well the last week was a pretty busy one again so I didn’t have much time to work on the case but I did manage to run out and grab materials to finish up the front panels on the first case. Stayed up tonight to atleast get the front done on the first one.

Hasn’t been cleaned up yet but it is still looking awesome and I’m even more excited to get ordering my lights for this bad boy!

Only downside to that is the cost of the lights I want :unamused: not sure if I’m gonna go big or go home on this one yet… I really wanna go big and have it be dope af but my wallet will NOT like it:face_exhaling: but either way I’m looking at around 70’ of led strip light and aluminum channel, a bunch of JST quick connects, a decent size spool of wire and led power drivers and controller to do what I’ve got planned so I’m leaning towards going all in on the strip lights themselves. If im gonna take the time and put the effort in then I might as well go big

Finished putting the borders on the last of the acrylic panels. Just need to fit them with the foam and magnets and I’ll have everything done except the lights!!

I’ll have to go back and look over everything for gaps in the foam and clean everything up real nice but other than that it’s just lights after this so it’s coming down to the home stretch!!

Looks nice, you put a lot of work into it! So my next question was it cheaper to build then buying one?

Yes most definitely, 6’Hx6’Wx18”D when stacked side by side and having the option of custom shelf height. I couldn’t find anything like that.

If I hadn’t screwed up cutting the acrylic the first time it would have cost me about 600 give or take. 200 total for the two shelf units and 225 for acrylic sheets. All the different mounting tape, magnetic tape and weatherstripping was where I could have gotten by a bit cheaper but I was doing a lot of trial and error and experimenting with different thickness and width to see what I liked best so I spent more than I wanted to on that.

Now go price out a Moducase that size and see if you wanna pay that price and wait a year for it lol

All panels are done and fit to the frame! Just have to join the two units together and seal that center gap! I might wait until after I have the next part done though…

NOW COMES THE FUN PART!!! I’m a total nerd when it comes to audio/video/lighting so figuring out the right way to lay out the lights so that I can split my signal at every corner of every shelf like I did my last case is going to be a fun project.

Cutting and soldering led strips, making splitter cables and jumper cables and making sure to add power every so often to keep the signal strong is what I’ve been looking forward to the most lol.

I’ve about got my shopping cart full of everything I need for that portion of the project I just want to make sure I’ve got it all planned out right in my head and it will work the way I want it to. I’ll order that and also the aluminum v channel shortly after.
