My DIY Display Case Journey

Here’s a quick update on the project.

I decided on lights. Hoping they are what I’m wanting lol taking a different route than originally planned after more digging. So I’m at a standstill until I get all the lighting supplies ordered. I ordered just enough to do half the case and a cheap controller to see if I like it.

Still need to order:

  • The rest of the lights
  • dedicated led controller & power supply
  • extra wire for making extension cables, jumpers and adapters
  • 3 pin jst 1-to-2 and 1-to-3 y split cables
  • Aluminum channel

Ordering the controller and power supply in a few minutes and hopefully the rest of the supplies this Friday after I get paid. I’m getting anxious to get started on this part of the project

And I’ll leave you with this other quick update

Maybe I’m just being cheeky
Maybe I have a lame sense of humor
Maybe I’m dead serious :man_shrugging:

looks fine to me personally. I don’t see an issue.

Jeebus, I’d be proud to have that for my collection.

I am super happy with it so far! it just looks like a whole lot of ass in there. I was just trying to be funny and make a joke by having all the ladies that have accentuated behinds all showing off their assets. Hence why I think it looks like ass

Aaaand we are back in action with this case! A freakin messy situation to say the least :joy:

I’ve received all the supplies i need to light this MF up.

  • x5 16ft rolls of WS2814 FCOB RGBW IC LED strips

  • 60’ of black aluminum led V-channel and diffuser

  • 1-to-2, 1-to-3, and 1-to-4 led splitter cables.

  • A few rolls of 18AWG wire

  • Wire ferrules and crimper

  • 25’ of magnetic tape

  • A 5 channel led controller

  • one big ass power supply

and also a couple boxes of 3-wire-to-9-wire junctions just incase👍

So my plan here is to do something similar to what I did with this last case… ROLL VIDEO from link below for brief explanation of light layout and example from my previous light job on my last case.

So first thing was to cut this channel to length using a handy dandy hack saw!

Next, cutting the LED strips to length as well as cutting magnetic tape strips to hold the channel to the metal frame.

I’m happy I’m able to use the magnetic tape this time around it’s going to be so much easier to work with in the future if I need to change out a portion of the lights or move the case at all. I’m also going to be soldering a male and female 3-pin JST connectors to either end of each strip so as to make each individual section easily removable for servicing.

I’m running these new strips all off of a single power supply (24v 500w 20A) that feeds a 5 output LED controller that is running WLED software. This part of the job is a new adventure for me considering I’ve never ran this many lights from one power source/controller. And I’ve also never messed around with WLED so it’s gonna be a learning curve and a bit of a challenge to make this work the way I imagine it but I know it is possible to do it with this setup I’m making and well DAMMIT y’all are gonna have to deal with my journey for a bit longer!!

I know this is probably more in depth than most people care to hear but maybe someone out there has an interest in this type of thing and can take something away from it. Either way it’s going to be a nice reference for myself to look back at!

And that’s it for now, the next step will be to dry fit the channel to estimate the length of wire needed when soldering ends on each end of each strip and then making or modifying the splitter cables.

And it wouldn’t hurt to remind everyone that electricity can KILL and can start FIRES if you don’t have the knowledge to be able to mess around with wiring electrical components DONT. Make sure to stay safe!

geesh! i cant wait to see the final outcome. its gonna look bad ass… . . you see those overpriced govee evangalion lights?

Last night l started to solder ends on each of the cut led strips making sure to dry fit each one into the channel inside the case to make sure my splitter cables have enough room to live in there too.

This part will probably take me a bit to get finished, I’m not going to have a lot of time this week to work on it but hopefully by next weekend I can dedicate a good block of time to it again. The end is so close I can taste it

@somwhere no I haven’t seen them but if they are govee brand then yeah probably waaaay overpriced. I bought a couple of their strips before and I was not too impressed with them tbh. They aren’t horrible but not up to what I was expecting for the price

I don’t know what’s worse, congradulating someone on being healthy or becoming a joke because you congradulated.

Ok well I have the inside all lit up! The software I’m running to control the lights is a lot more “intense” than I was ready for…lol a lot of coding involved to get the desired effects layout I want so I may do a little rework in the future but for now the inside is done!

Now I’m just waiting for my second power supply to show up Tuesday and I’ll be able to power the lights on the backside/underside and I’ll be finished (until I decide to rework if I can’t get the coding on the effects right.)

Here’s a few pics I snapped real quick… they are too bright and the camera has a hard time with it :sunglasses: I’ll make sure to get all my figures in this case once I have the back done for a final post/picture! Then I’ll split them up again into both cases and get a good room shot to share!
